Here’s some lame iphone documentation of the project I finished last night.  I crocheted (and felted the stars on) this American flag.  I wanted to talk about the flag as a symbol of protection– how so many people use the flag and believe it to be representative of how great our country is.  But the flag is only a symbol and our country isn’t great because our flag says it is, any country is great because its people make it that way.  The loose crochet and distorted shape represent the way our country is so divided and torn on so many issues.  It also represents the way problems are often loosely patched over or temporarily solved rather than altering the groundwork.  I wanted to reference the age-old idea of “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”  So many people seem to think that being in America automatically means a superior life when it’s really up to us to make our country strong and respectable.

for scale, there’s half of a wall outlet in the bottom of the photo.  It’s such a stretchy piece that I don’t really have accurate measurements for it.
